Working under the sun is more exciting! "Said Xie Guimin, who has been working underground in coal mines for more than 30 years.

In Meishan Village, Duoshan Town, Lengshuijiang City, Hunan Province, 67 year old Xie Guimin braved the scorching sun to shuttle through the grape planting base. While picking the purple and red grapes, he calculated this year's harvest with a smile and said, "With 150 acres of grapes, we can earn at least 2 million yuan in income

In Meishan Village, there are still many "old miners" like Xie Guimin who have transformed into "new fruit farmers" from digging "black" underground to planting "green" on the ground. In the past, the industrial foundation of the village was weak, and most villagers worked in the surrounding coal mines to make a living, "said Xie Parasitic, the secretary of the Meishan Village Party Committee. With the depletion of resources and the emergence of environmental problems, the traditional extensive development mode is difficult to continue.

Villagers who have given up their 'coal rice bowl' are now seeking a new way out - according to scientific research institutions, Meishan Village's soil is rich in selenium, making it advantageous for growing grapes. So, the village formed an agricultural cooperative and called on the villagers to plant grapes.

Can I grow good fruits after being a miner for half my life? "Xie Guimin said, feeling uncertain at first. But as he watched the village collective take the lead in "testing the waters" and see the benefits getting better and better, he was also moved and began to focus on learning techniques and planting in his sixties, becoming a famous "grape farmer".

Nowadays, Meishan Village is continuously expanding the scale of the grape industry through the development model of "cooperatives+farmers", allowing more and more "old miners" to enjoy "ecological food". In 2023, the grape planting scale in the whole village will reach more than 1500 acres, and the expected output value will exceed 50 million yuan.

The "green transformation" of Meishan villagers from mines to orchards is a vivid testimony to the ecological priority and green development transformation of Lengshuijiang.

Lengshuijiang is an important industrial and mining city in central Hunan, with abundant antimony and coal resources, and is known as the "World Antimony Capital" and "Jiangnan Coal Sea". But for a period of time, the disorderly exploitation of mineral resources seriously damaged the ecological environment.

In recent years, Lengshuijiang has taken strong measures to rectify polluted factories and mines and promote ecological restoration. At the same time, combining the hilly terrain and unique climate and soil conditions, guide each town and village to develop characteristic small fruit industries according to local conditions.

Entering Guangming Village in Sanjian Town, the reporter saw that the yellow peach planting base under Shuiyun Peak was covered with round and plump yellow peaches with bright colors on the branches.

"I didn't expect this barren mountain to become a 'treasure mountain'." Liu Laiqiu, a villager who is picking yellow peaches, said that Guangming Village has a steep mountain. Due to the previous overexploitation of resources, a large area of mountain has become a barren mountain. In case of heavy rainstorm, the risk of geological disasters is high.

We have found a way out for this mountain, "said Li Liang, the deputy mayor of Sanjian Town. Guangming Village has transformed from a provincial-level poverty-stricken village to a national" one village, one product "demonstration village by introducing leading enterprises and planting yellow peaches in contiguous areas." Shuiyunfeng Yellow Peach "has been certified as a national geographical indication agricultural product.

Hunan Shuiyunfeng Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. has transferred nearly 3000 acres of land here to plant yellow peaches, driving employment for more than 100 people. The company's leader Jiang Hongyun said that they are also preparing to develop products such as canned peaches, preserved peaches, and crispy peaches for deep processing.

Huang Taohan has nourished the soil and water, beautified the mountains and forests, and enriched the villagers. During the season when peach blossoms are in full bloom or fruits are ripe, a continuous stream of tourists come to visit and pick. Many villagers have taken advantage of this to establish homestays and camping bases, making their days even sweeter, "said Liu Haijun, Secretary of the Guangming Village Party Branch.

Through intensive planting, branded management, and green management, small fruits have become the 'ecological fruit' and 'wealth fruit' of the industrial and mining city of Lengshuijiang. "Zhou Chengjun, Deputy Director of the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Lengshuijiang City, introduced that in 2022, the city planted 66000 acres of high-quality small fruits such as grapes, peaches, pomelos, and bayberries, with an annual output of 80000 tons.

Next, we will further promote the combination of small fruit industry with mining area restoration and barren mountain greening, while extending the processing industry chain, promoting the integration of agriculture and tourism, and turning the small fruit industry into a 'green business card' of Lengshuijiang, "said Zhou Chengjun.
